In eigener Sache

CPEC and human rights – China as an investor in Pakistan

Human rights violations in China have been very present in the media recently, such as the general restriction of freedom of expression and freedom of the press, the current situation in Hong Kong or the oppression of the Uighurs and other minorities. But serious violations of human rights agreements are also committed by Chinese actors outside the People’s Republic of China: Since the start of the Chinese-Pakistani joint infrastructure project CPEC (China–Pakistan Economic Corridor) in 2013, China plays an increasingly important role as an investor in Pakistan – where people in the Balochistan region have suffered serious human rights violations and economic exploitation for years.

In this webinar, Baloch human rights activist Jawad Baloch and the amnesty expert for Pakistan, Sigrid Krieg, will discuss the impact of CPEC for the human rights situation in Balochistan.

The link to the Amnesty Meeting conference room will be announced on the day of the event. Consecutive translation into German and English will be provided.

Note

This discussion was part of a series of events in the context of public discourse and events surrounding the EU China Summit which was planned for September 2020 but postponed because of the pandemic. Nevertheless, we will – digitally and without risk of infection – go ahead as planned with our events because we consider drawing attention to the grave human rights violations by Chinese officials to be relevant and important.
